If you’ve owned a house long enough, you have probably had to deal with a leaking shower pan at one time or another. The water can sometimes leak from a shower pan for months and even years before serious problems start to appear. And by then you have mold and mildew to deal with on top of replacing the leaking shower pan and surrounding tile.
Most building codes require a 1/4 inch pre-slope of mortar under your shower pan liner and then 1/4 inch slope on the mortar in the shower pan itself. The theory is to get that water running downhill towards your drain and weep holes instead of sitting in the bottom of your pan liner where it might cause problems. In the event the pan liner fails, it also should reduce the amount of water damage to surrounding areas by channeling as much of the water possible towards the drain.
But what if water never touched the mortar shower pan?
KERDI Membrane Made by Schluter®
Rob Mac Superior Tile Installation prefers to do things right the first time and prevent water from ever coming into contact with your mortar shower pan, let alone leak all the way down to the pan liner. After forming your mortar shower pan over the pan liner, Rob Mac install a layer of KERDI membrane made by Schluter® over the mortar that not only makes an excellent water and moisture barrier, but also helps reduce flex which leads to cracks in your grout. All corners, joints and shower curbs are also treated with a layer of KERDI membrane.
This puts your shower pan above local building codes and gives you peace of mind that your investment is safe for years to come.
Rob Mac Superior Tile Installation has been using KERDI membrane made by Schluter® for so long and with such good results, he has been asked to train others in his methods.
My husband Tom and I thank our lucky stars that we met Rob MacFarlane and he agreed to do the tile work in our master bathroom. Our bathroom was a 30 year old outdated ugly area and now is gorgeous thanks to Rob.
Rob is highly skilled at laying tile PERFECTLY, incredibly RELIABLE, had great ideas for maximizing space and has an upbeat “Can Do” attitude. His work ethic would be hard to beat. The finished product was beyond our expectations.
